What do Yorgos and one of Greece's finest wines have in common 🇬🇷🍷

I'll tell you in a minute.
But first, let me ask you a question.
🍷 What do you know about Greek wines?
Whenever I ask that question during one of my wine tastings, the answer is almost always the same...
"Retsina."
And every single time, it makes me smile. Because Greece has so much more to offer.
For me, wine is much more than what's in your glass. It is history, culture, traditions, passion and the landscape where it was born. Every time I travel through Greece, I discover something new. A winery I hadn't visited before, an indigenous grape variety, a passionate winemaker or simply another story waiting to be told.
Many people don't realise that Greece is one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world. Wine has been made here for more than 4,000 years, and today Greek wines are finally receiving the recognition they deserve. Traditional wineries have invested heavily in quality over the past decades, while others have rediscovered indigenous grape varieties and combined centuries of tradition with modern winemaking techniques.
One of the things I love most about Greek wines is that they don't try to copy Italian wines. They are simply Authentic Greek. Honest. Full of character. Exactly like the country itself.
During our wine journeys with Authentic Greece.expert, we visit two of Greece's most important PDO wine regions. Although they are only a relatively short drive apart, they couldn't be more different.
🍇 Our first stop is Mantinia, one of the highest wine regions in Greece.
The vineyards lie at around 650 metres above sea level, surrounded by mountains that keep the nights refreshingly cool, even during the hottest summer months. These conditions are perfect for Moschofilero, one of Greece's most elegant indigenous grape varieties.
If you've never tasted Moschofilero before, you're in for a surprise. Delicate aromas of roses, citrus blossom, pear and fresh herbs. Mantinia is also producing beautiful sparkling wines that are still relatively unknown outside Greece.
🍷 Then we continue to Nemea, probably Greece's best-known red wine region and the home of Agiorgitiko.
And now... back to Yorgos.
Have you ever met a Greek called Yorgos?
Chances are you have. It is one of the most common names in Greece. Yorgos is the modern Greek form of George, and its origins go all the way back to the ancient Greek word georgos, meaning "the man who works the land", or simply "farmer."
Quite a humble origin for one of Greece's finest wines. 🧿
The famous grape Agiorgitiko takes its name from Agios Georgios, the historical name of present-day Nemea. According to Greek mythology, this is also the land where Hercules defeated the Nemean Lion, which is why Agiorgitiko is often called "The Blood of Hercules." Whether that's true... I'll leave that up to the Greeks. It certainly makes for a good story during a wine tasting!
What I love about Agiorgitiko is its versatility. Depending on the vineyard and the altitude, it can produce vibrant, fruity wines that are perfect to enjoy young, but also elegant wines with beautiful structure, silky tannins and flavours of cherries, blackberries, sweet spices and a touch of dark chocolate that can age beautifully for many years.
And that is exactly why I love this journey. Not just tasting wines, but standing there, in the vineyards, hearing the stories and understanding why the wine tastes the way it does. 💙
