.  💙 METHONI - Messinia - Greece

A PLACE THAT TOUCHED MY HEART

Sometimes you come across a place that touches you deeply.

Methoni is such a place.

I have seen a lot of Greece over the years, but when I first drove into Methoni 23 years ago from charming Finikounda, I knew immediately. There it was, quietly resting between the Greek blue sea 🌊 and an equally blue sky, with its white houses, red flowers 🌺, fishing boats gently rocking in the harbour and its magnificent Venetian castle 🏰 where centuries of history have been written.

I fell in love💙

More than twenty years later, I still feel exactly the same whenever I arrive.

Methoni is peaceful and authentic, with that small touch of sophistication – just enough to surprise you. A beautiful terrace overlooking the Greek Blue Sea. A good glass of wine 🍷. A refined Greek meal prepared with love. A charming little boutique. It is subtle and exactly right 🧿

The magnificent Venetian castle. I have always had a special affection for Venetian history and every time I walk through the fortress, I can almost hear the waves crashing against the ancient walls and feel the centuries of history surrounding me.

For almost four centuries, from 1209 until 1500, and briefly again in the 17th century, the Venetians ruled here, transforming Methoni into one of the most important strongholds in the Mediterranean. At its height, around 2,000 to 3,000 people lived within these mighty walls.

Standing there and looking out over the endless Greek blue sea 🌊, it is easy to imagine Venetian merchant ships approaching the harbour after their long journey across the Mediterranean. Sailors coming ashore. Traders speaking different languages. The constant connection between Venice, Methoni and the East.

History feels alive in Methoni.

But Methoni is not only about history.

The landscape surrounding the village is covered with endless olive groves 🌿, their silver-green leaves shining under the sun ☀️. Some of these trees are hundreds of years old. Sometimes I find a quiet spot beneath one of them and simply sit there.

Listening. Breathing. Feeling.

The wind moving through the branches. The scent of warm earth, olive leaves and the sea. The silence. A silence that somehow never feels empty.

And sometimes I find myself wondering what these ancient trees would say if they could speak.

How many generations have sat beneath them?

How many stories have they witnessed?

How many dreams, loves, disappointments and hopes have passed beneath these trees?

This is the heart of the world-famous Kalamata olive oil region. Here, the sun, the sea breeze and the fertile soils create the perfect conditions for the Koroneiki olive. Small in size, yet incredibly rich in oil, it produces some of the finest extra virgin olive oil in the world.

Rich, elegant and full of character. Just like Methoni itself.

And every time I leave, I already know one thing for certain.

I will be back💙
