Athens & Nafplion - six days in Greece in between

Sometimes you just feel like going to Greece for a while.

​

That is why we combine Athens and Nafplion in 6 days and 5 nights. An extra-long weekend, two totally different cities, and a bit of the Peloponnese thrown in. And the best part is: you can take this trip almost all year round. In fact, we might even like it better outside of the summer.

​

Why the two capitals? Athens is the current capital of Greece, and Nafplion was the first capital of the modern Greek state.

​

Athens is large, lively, and different every time. Nafplion is elegant, a touch sophisticated, with Venetian traces, beautiful squares, a lovely boulevard, and nice restaurants and terraces everywhere.

🧿 Day 1 – From Athens to Nafplion

Upon arrival at Athens Airport, your rental car will be waiting for you. From here, you drive along an excellent highway to Nafplion, approximately 170 kilometers away, in about two hours.

​

The holiday actually begins on the way. You pass the Corinth Canal, cross the Isthmus, and are on the Peloponnese. Then you drive on towards Argolis and Nafplion.

​

In Nafplion, you will stay two nights at Hotel Agamemnon, right on the boulevard. The sea is at your doorstep, the Bourtzi is in view, and the historic center is around the corner.

Put down the suitcases and go outside.

🧿 Day 2 – Nafplion

Nafplion is one of those cities where you naturally end up lingering longer. Elegant, a touch sophisticated, and with traces of Venetia everywhere. Narrow streets, old facades, beautiful squares, the boulevard, the Bourtzi in the sea, and Palamidi high above the city.

​

And the food here is truly amazing. From a long lunch by the sea to small restaurants in the old town, it is not difficult to find something delicious in Nafplion.

And then the oranges.

Around Nafplion, you really drive through oranges everywhere. In season, the trees are laden with oranges, and you can buy them everywhere along the road. My tip: pack a small citrus juicer in your luggage. I don't think oranges are as delicious anywhere else as they are here.

Would you like to do something today? We can, for example, arrange a cooking class in Nafplion, Mycenae, or Epidaurus, or a trip to Tolo.

​

But you can also simply stroll through Nafplion, have a leisurely lunch, and choose a terrace.

After all, Nafplion is also very good at that.

🧿 Day 3 – Via Nemea to Athens

After breakfast, you drive back towards Athens. You can go directly, of course, but we wouldn't choose that ourselves.

Along the way lies Nemea, one of the most famous wine regions of Greece and the land of Agiorgitiko. For wine lovers, we can book a visit with a tasting at Semeli Estate, for example. This is one of Greece's largest and most important wineries. Absolutely stunning.

And of course, you can stop at the Corinth Canal along the way if you haven't taken ample time to do so on the outward journey.

​

Afterwards, you drive to Athens Airport, return the rental car, and go to the city center.

Here you will stay for three nights at the Anasa Boutique Hotel**, right in the heart of Athens. It doesn't get much more central than this.

​

From now on, you no longer need a car.

​

🧿 Day 4 & 5 – Athens

Athens never gets boring.

The Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki, markets, museums, small restaurants, shops, rooftop bars, and neighborhoods where there is something new to discover every time.

​

We have therefore included a guided bike tour of Athens in the trip. It is a fun way to see a lot of the city in a short time, but also to visit places you might not easily find on your own.

Prefer tasting to cycling? Then we will replace the bike tour with a Gourmet Food Walking Tour for an extra €15 per person.

​

We deliberately leave the other day free. To the Acropolis, a museum, good food, shopping, or just into the city. Of course, we will share our tips with you.

​

🧿 Day 6 – Still Athens

Depending on your flight, you might still have time for a final walk, coffee, or lunch.

After that, you go to the airport for your flight home.

And would you like to stay an extra night? Or perhaps extend this trip by a few days?

Then we'll just do that.

This trip absolutely does not have to be in July or August.

In spring, it is wonderful to spend a lot of time outdoors. Autumn is often still mild and sunny. And even in winter, Athens and Nafplion continue to live life as usual. Restaurants are open, it is much quieter at the archaeological sites, and around Nafplion, it is peak orange season.

And that is exactly why we like this trip so much.
