Just imagine. Having breakfast on the terrace in the morning with a view of the sea. Afterwards? To the beach. Maybe take the car and drive into Messinia. Or stay by the pool a little longer. And in the evening to Methoni. A table by the sea, a good glass of wine, and all the time in the world. This is a holiday in Methoni. You will stay seven nights at the small Hotel La Sapienza, including breakfast and a rental car. And would you like to travel longer? Then we would be delighted to combine Methoni with Athens and Nafplion.
Why Methoni specifically?
I have seen a great deal of Greece over the years, but when I drove into charming Finikounda Methoni 24 years ago, I knew it immediately.
Before me lay the Greek-blue sea, the small harbor with fishing boats, and of course that beautiful Venetian castle.
I fell in love.
And more than twenty years later, I still have exactly the same feeling when I drive into Methoni.
Fortunately, Methoni has largely remained Methoni. No mass tourism, no large hotels along the coast. Instead, it is a village where life is still lived normally, with seaside terraces, good tavernas and restaurants, small shops, and one of the most beautiful castles in Greece.
Methoni is authentic, with that little touch of sophistication that I like so much.
It is subtle. And just right.
And then La Sapienza....
Just outside Methoni lies Hotel La Sapienza, situated slightly higher up the hill with a beautiful view of the sea towards the island of Sapienza.
It is a small hotel with only 15 spacious studios and suites, a large garden, and a lovely swimming pool. In the morning, breakfast is ready for you on the terrace.
The studios and suites feature air conditioning and a kitchenette. Wi-Fi and private parking are included. Cleaning is provided every two days, and towels, bed linen, and pool towels are also available.
La Sapienza doesn't have a restaurant. But we actually only like that. Methoni is nearby, and there are plenty of places where we like to eat ourselves.
Discover Messinia by car
The rental car is waiting for you at the airport. And you will probably use it more often than you initially think.
The beautiful town of Pylos lies 11 kilometers away, and Finikounda is practically around the corner. Drive to Gialova and the famous Voidokilia beach, have lunch in Koroni, or visit the Palace of Nestor and Ancient Messene.
But for us, Messinia is also Wine & Food. Visit a winery, taste olive oil at a local producer, or sit down somewhere for a lunch that could easily last the rest of the afternoon.
Do you enjoy golfing? Then Costa Navarino is nearby, with four international 18-hole golf courses. We can, of course, reserve your tee times for you.
And then there are the places that weren't in your plans. That small beach you drive past on the way. A village where you stop for coffee. That tavern where you actually only wanted to eat something light.
And do you see something nice along the way? Stop. That is Messinia to me.
Flying to Kalamata
La Sapienza is located approximately 55 kilometers from Kalamata Airport. During the season, there are direct flights from various European cities, including Amsterdam and Düsseldorf.
You can also fly to Athens, especially if you want to combine Methoni with Athens and Nafplion; that is a great option.
