Wine & Food

Taste the Greece we really know

We might be a tad addicted to authenticity. And certainly when it comes to wine and food.

Because food and wine are simply culture too. Old recipes, products specific to a region, grape varieties you hardly find anywhere else. Why is something made right here? Where does it come from? What goes with it?

We want to know that. And yes, of course, taste it too.

Greek wine... we really have a thing for that 🍷

Agiorgitiko, Moschofilero, Assyrtiko, Malagousia... Greece has so many indigenous grape varieties, and truly fantastic wines are made there.

And then there are the stories behind them. Take Agiorgitiko from Nemea. Do you know a Greek named Yorgos? Of course. It is probably the most famous Greek male name. And then it turns out that even a glass of wine has a link to Yorgos: Agiorgitiko comes from Agios Georgios, the ancient name of Nemea.

That’s what I like. You start with a glass of wine, and before you know it, you’re talking about a region, history, and traditions. Want to know more about Greek wines ?

Olive oil. Lots and lots of olive oil. 🫒

Talking about Greece and food without olive oil? That's practically impossible.

There are an estimated more than 170 million olive trees in Greece, and the average Greek consumes about 15 liters of olive oil per year. Just imagine!

And then there is the Koroneiki. That small olive that you come across everywhere, especially on the Peloponnese, and from which fantastic extra virgin olive oil is made. Olive oil is in the kitchen here, in old recipes, in the landscape, and in life. And it is healthy, too.

We therefore find tasting a good fresh olive oil at the producer at least as interesting as visiting a beautiful winery.

Wine & Food has been part of our travels for years.

And not only in Greece. We have been organizing special wine and culinary tours in Greece and Italy for years. We even have a separate website for our Italian wine tours: Wijnreizen.it.

And that can be done in many ways. Join one of our own Wine & Food tours , a fully customized wine tour, or a culinary tour with your own group. Or a few days in Athens where we don't just look at the Acropolis, but focus primarily on what ends up on the table and in the glass.

It doesn't have to be a wine trip at all, by the way. We can also simply include those few special addresses and experiences in your trip that make the difference.

For you can look at a country. But sometimes you only truly get to know it when you taste it.
